AGIP - Association of Gastrointestinal Physiology
The Association of Gastrointestinal Physiology (AGIP) is an Associate group within the ڰ (ڰ), inaugurated in 1991.
AGIP is a member and active participant of the Professional Bodies Council, Academy of Healthcare Science which aims for a clear ‘One Voice’ to represent the majority of over 65,000 people working in the profession of Healthcare Science across the UK.
Below you can find useful information on current practice and training. AGIP provides support in attaining Accredited Practitioner status and for scientist training with the National School of Healthcare Science. If you would like to become a member of AGIP, please scroll down to the membership section below.
The list of current AGIP committee members and roles are listed towards the bottom of the page. Elections are held for vacant roles in the Spring of each year and members will receive an email from the ڰ with information on how to vote or nominate themselves. Members wishing to stand for election must be both an active member and accredited practitioner of AGIP. More information can be found on the ڰ elections page under “Section Committees”.

NewWave
NewWave is the official and only newsletter of AGIP, which has been in circulation since 1998. NewWave was reformatted into an e-newsletter in 2011 and is produced and sent to its members quarterly.
The aim of the e-newsletter is to keep its members up to date and informed of recent developments. This will be achieved by providing its members with articles and featured abstracts, information on forthcoming meetings and any other relevant information that may be of interest.
If you have any information that you feel may be of interest to AGIP members (articles, forthcoming meetings, adverts etc.) then please feel free to get in touch with the current NewWave editor: Gemma Norris.

AGIP Accredited Independent Healthcare Practitioner CPD; New Online Process:
Accredited practitioners are required to provide evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) every two years. Failure to do so and on time may result in the loss of accredited status. The portal for submissions will be closed after 31st March 2026.
Our newly revamped process and guidance can be found here.
Please read and then download the new Reflective Practice Word form and save it to your desktop. You will then be able to complete this form, save six separate reflective practice forms (three each year of the CPD cycle). You will also need to save six corresponding pieces of evidence (for example, certificates or evidence of attendance) one for each reflective practice form i.e. six pieces of evidence in total
Once the above is complete, please proceed to the final step by completing the online application form, which can be accessed via the portal .
Any questions or if you need any clarification on the new process, please email [email protected]

Training
Training Pathways
There are currently three approved training routes into Gastrointestinal (GI)Physiology for individuals looking to develop their career, and for hospitals aiming to develop or expand their service. The Scientist Training Programme (STP) – Direct Entry, STP – In-Service Entry, and the Accredited Specialist Scientific Practitioner (ASP) programme each offer a different structure, funding model, and entry pathway. This section provides a brief overview and signposts to further resources to help identify the most suitable training route.
To learn more, please follow the links below to access web pages or documents that provide further information about each of the training routes.

Equivalence and Portfolio Examples
For those with sufficient training and experience outside of the ASP and STP, applying for equivalence may be an option. The AHCS has developed equivalence assessment processes for Healthcare Science practitioners who have training, qualifications and/or considerable professional experience, and who wish to show that these are equivalent to the relevant training programme accredited by the National School of Healthcare Science (e.g. ASP / STP).
